Students and
Community Get Safer Ride, Cleaner Environment
Columbus, OH - July 13, 2009
– Columbus City Schools received 69 of 137 new, cleaner-burning school buses
this week to provide a safer ride for students and a better environment for
Columbus. The new buses were purchased with the support of the Columbus
community through overwhelming passage of Issue 75 last fall and will replace
older buses, some dating to 1986. The buses have new safety features, reduced
emissions,
and will save the
district approximately $300,000 a year in maintenance costs.
“We have made significant
progress in reducing emissions from our entire fleet of 543
buses by
installing retrofitting technologies and implementing a plan to replace 265 of
our oldest buses,” said Columbus City Schools Superintendent Gene T. Harris,
Ph.D. “We are thankful to the Columbus community for allowing us to make this
important investment to provide significant air quality and health benefits for
Columbus City School students, teachers, bus drivers, mechanics and our
community.”
