Voices rose high and proud to show that black Greek lettered
organizations can "do more than step and stroll."
Greek Meets Gospel Scholarship Concert brought together members from
all local black fraternities and sororites for Saturday night's
performance at the FCI Academy on Mock Road.
Members of the New Birth Ministries Praise Team, Living Faith
Apostolic Church Choir, FCI Academy Gospel Choir, Peggy Lacey &
Friends, Higher Ground youth Choir and New Salem Baptist Church Choir
provided the musical part of the program.
The following scholarships were presented: $500 - Sterling Mills Canal
Winchester, to attend Hampton University; $750 - Jazmine Tucker of
Northland High School, to attend Howard University; and $1,000 -
Armand Troy of the Wellington School, to attend Morehouse University.
The money comes from the Alpha Rho Lambda Education Foundation, the
chapter's fundraising arm, said Carlos Bing, director of education.
Greek Meets Gospel is a way to reinvigorate our program and reach a
different segment of the population, said Dale Gresson, president of
the Alpha Rho Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Although Alphas presented the program, members of other fraternities
and sororities were invited. Representatives from Delta Sigma Theta,
Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi attended, Gresson said.
Some frat members were down because they had buried brother Ed
Thompson, former program manager at the Neighborhood House, earlier in
the day, but most effectively put on a strong front for the benefit of
the concert audience.
"It encourages me to be a little bit better," said Ramiah Douglas, 11.
Her brother, Jordan Chambers, 6, said he liked the jokes of Alpha
Garey Lewis, emcee for the event.
Lewis had a recurring gag about sacrificial chickens that awaited the
audience for the post-concert repast.
