Two categories of performance yielded clear-cut winners at a citywide talent show on Saturday, but a third grouping was too close to call.

Competitors from local middle and high schools vied for cash prizes in vocals, creative arts and dance at the third Achievement Matters Citywide Talent Show at Fort Hayes Arts & Academic High School. The event was hosted on April 25 by the Columbus Urban League’s Youth African American Peer Leadership Alliance Against Tobacco.

Winners in the vocals category are:

First place – Demeeshia Marshall

Second place – Dasan Williams

Third place – Marliese Hunter and Jamesia Tucker

In creative arts:

First place -- Shameaca Moore

Second place –Barnett Senior Dance Group

Third place – Jeff Hawkins

Marshall and Moore receive $300 each.

Tabulation of votes in the dance category, as the audience eventually learned, accounted for the delayed announcement of winners. The extra time allowed representatives from the Columbus Urban League, the Columbus Department of Recreation and Parks, Marko Records and others to talk about their programs and the reasons for their support of the talent show.

Ultimately, the $300 first place prize for dance was split between the Roots of Righteousness and Hypnotic teams. They were followed by Narada Myers and Gamma Phi Psi Haven.
