Quite a spectacle

When high winds sent a $500 pair of eyeglasses from a Downtown worker’s face to a sewer near the Statehouse on Friday, Sept. 24, a couple of city workers came to the rescue.

Al Martin and Melvin Boyd, both of whom are sewer service investigators, used a shovel to fish out the glasses.

Martin cleaned them off and returned them to Deborah Wolfe, who tried them on only to have another gust of wind dislodge them. This time, the glasses didn’t land in the goop, but a lens was knocked from its frame and landed on the sidewalk along State Street.

Your News Columbus helped find the lens, which Wolfe tucked in her purse, along with the rest of the wayward eyewear. She donned a snug-fitting pair of sunglasses and went on her way.

Martin said he has retrieved other valuables from city sewers, including a Blackberry and jewelry.

Hot fun in the Summertime! August 2010

The Heritage apartments along with its community partners – Northeast Area Commission and Recreation and Parks, held their  annual festival at Somerset Park in the northeast area of Columbus. The day could not have been better for the fun-filled activities that included face painting, a watermelon contest, sack racing, dunk tank, and the bounce for the little kids.

While indulging in popcorn, cotton candy and hot dogs, spectators sat back and enjoyed The Heritage “Soccer Tournament,” which was one of the highlights of the day.

Thanks to the City of Columbus Fire Department, adults and youth had an opportunity to learn about fire safety through the exposure of the “Fire Safe House.” The line was long for this event, and the participants were appreciative of the Firemen on hand to explain the purpose of the “Fire Safe House.”

It was a great day!
