Central Ohio Diabetes Association Still Accepting Applications for 2009 Youth Day Camps
Financial assistance is available for those who qualify
May 19, 2009--The Central Ohio Diabetes Association has announced the schedule for its summer day camps for youth with diabetes. The camps are held at the Hoover Y Park just south of Columbus.
The Central Ohio Diabetes Association Kids Camp, June 15-17, is for children ages 3 to 7. The program encourages campers to explore their potential, try different activities, build friendships and learn about diabetes. Siblings and parents are encouraged to be involved in the daily camp experience. Cost to attend is $95 per child. The Central Ohio Diabetes Association Kids Camp also includes a free diabetes education session for campers’ parents. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.
Stepping Stones, June 18-20, is an introductory program for youth with diabetes, ages 8 to 12, who want to try an overnight camping experience before moving up to residential camp. The program is designed to assist campers in learning more about themselves and their diabetes while having fun and making friends. Cost to attend is $120 per child.
The day camps for youth with diabetes are a result of the Central Ohio Diabetes Association’s success with its Camp Hamwi, for children ages 7 to 17. The residential camp in Danville, OH, is celebrating its 42nd year of helping children learn how to manage their diabetes.
Diabetes is a disease affecting the body’s ability to produce or respond to insulin, a hormone which allows blood sugar to enter the cells of the body and be used for energy. Diabetes falls into two main categories, Type 1, which usually begins during childhood or early adulthood, and Type 2, usually occurring after age 40. Common symptoms include frequent urination, increased hunger, increased thirst, weight loss or gain, headache, blurred vision, dry skin and poor wound healing.
