GCAC TO HOLD PUBLIC BOARD MEETING TO VOTE ON SPRING GRANTS

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On Thu., May 28, the Greater Columbus Arts Council will host a public meeting of its Board of Trustees to vote on allocations for the 2009 Operating Support and spring Project Support grants. The meeting will take place from noon to 1 p.m. at the GCAC offices, 100 E. Broad St. Ste. 2250.

GCAC’s Operating Support grants, funded by the City of Columbus, are unrestricted funding. Under the grants guidelines, any Columbus nonprofit arts organization of any budget size can qualify for Operating Support so long as they meet eligibility criteria. Applicants must demonstrate exemplary artistic achievement and significant impact on the city’s economy and tourism.

GCAC awarded $2,599,998 in Operating Support grants to 19 organizations in 2008.

GCAC's Project Support grants, given twice annually, provide City of Columbus funding for specific activities distinguishable from an organization's ongoing operations and programming. Last year, GCAC awarded $297,451 in Project Support grants to 31 initiatives.

Both Project Support and Operating Support grants are funded through City of Columbus funding.

During the May 28 meeting, the GCAC Board of Trustees will allocate money for grant requests based on scores the applications received by the GCAC Peer Review Panel and recommendations by the GCAC Grants Committee. The Peer Review Panel is composed of residents of the greater Columbus metropolitan statistical area who have experience in the arts or arts management, and the Grants Committee is appointed from the membership of the GCAC Board of Trustees.

During the meeting, GCAC will also acknowledge the 2008 Individual Artist Fellowship recipients. The Fellowship artists, chosen from 99 applicants, are: Janis Mars Wunderlich (craft), Chris Mohler (three-dimensional visual arts), Shauna Merriman (three-dimensional visual arts) and Tariq Mohamed (photography). Each Fellowship winner received $5,000 based on the artistic merit of works submitted in the disciplines of crafts, two- and three-dimensional visual arts and photography.

Following the Board meeting, GCAC will host a combined reception for the 2008 Individual Artist Fellowship recipients and Spring 2009 grant applicants in the GCAC conference room, 100 E. Broad St. Ste. 2250. The IAF reception, originally scheduled for January, was postponed due to weather conditions.
