How many times have you promised to end your addiction to what is called "Creamy Crack" in the hair care industry, only to schedule another touch up, eight weeks later? You promised yourself this will be the year to end the chemicals, but find yourself putting it off yet again.
Karen Gary, master stylist at Synergi Salon, delivered a wake-up call in her GetitStrait! Workshop on Saturday at the King Arts Complex that was hard to ignore. The free workshop provided information about how to achieve healthy hair without using harsh chemical straighteners, some of which have the same alkaline chemical mix as hair-removal products and drain cleaners.
Gary used her extensive background as a master stylist, her consultations regarding hair challenges and issues, and her 22 years of experience to develop her exclusive product line named for her salon, Synergi.
She offers clients a plan and a promise: A one year "relaxer free journey" with her staff and expertise as a guide. A choice of 12 maintenance products designed to assist with kicking the "creamy crack" habit, and the promise that her plan will return hair to its strong, thick, long, healthy, natural state.
Gary ’s client base is 85 percent natural, yet her products provide clients versatility to wear their hair straight or curly.
Jeanett Jones regularly visits Synergi Salon, 5160 E. Main St. , and uses Gary 's products for maintenance between visits.
"I haven't had a perm in approximately six months," Jones said.
And yet, her hair looks bone straight and healthy and has "swing" when she moves.
Trial run
Intrigued by all this, product junkie that I am, I had to try it for myself.
My hair has been in its natural state for three years. I purchased two products recommended for curly twist sets, Get It Strait Glaze, and Be-Free Thermal Mousse. The first thing I noticed was a smoothing effect as I twisted my own hair. It seemed to air dry in approximately three hours, and, as I untwisted my hair, my curls had definition and a smooth shine, lots of bounce, hold, and I’m frizz free.
