High School Students Encouraged to Explore the Lowcountry:
Black Culture Literacy and History in Charleston, SC

Upcoming graduates of the class of 2009 and current high
school sophomores and juniors are encouraged to apply to attend The Ohio State
University Summer Residential Program to be held June 22-July 2.
The OSU
Summer Residential Program is being offered by The Department of African
American and African Studies and the Department of African American and African
Studies Community Extension Center.
The theme of this two-week program is "The Lowcountry: Black Culture, Literacy
and History in Charleston, South Carolina." During this program, students will
engage in a focused study of the Gullah culture in Charleston, South Carolina.
Students will receive classroom instruction about Charleston, South Carolina;
take a three-day field trip to this southern city and examine its various
cultural and historical elements and discuss the literacy contributions of
African Americans. Each student will create a final presentation that
demonstrates their knowledge of the culture, literacy and history of Charleston,
South Carolina.
The Summer Residential Program helps high school students develop the critical
thinking skills necessary for success in high school, college, and beyond. By
focusing on aspects of the African American experience, program participants
gain an understanding of how the social, economic, political and moral
implications of blackness affect the lives of all Americans.
