Unprecedented quad for Nation's No. 1 ranked Northland high school basketball team

The Northland High School boys basketball team captured its fourth straight City League title Saturday, Feb. 20, with a 65-52 win over Marion-Franklin in the gym of East High School. The victorious Vikings are believed to be the first City League team to win four straight league championships without a single in-conference loss. The senior players were 60-0 against City foes during that stretch.

Two local high schools and feeder schools chosen for national initiative

Some of the speakers at Monday's announcement of a $1.25 million NEA Foundation grant to Columbus City Schools were, from left: Patricia Frost-Brooks, president, Ohio Education Association; Columbus Schools Superintendent Gene T. Harris; John Stanford, executive assistant for education policy, office of the governor; Rhonda Johnson, president and CEO, Columbus Education Association; Janet Jackson, president and CEO, United Way of Central Ohio; and Carol Perkins, president, Columbus Board of Education.

Vast improvements in schooling in the Linden and Briggs area are expected under a $1.25 million grant from the NEA Foundation to a partnership of the Columbus Education Association and Columbus City Schools, with support from the United Way of Central Ohio.

The Earned Income Tax Credit: You Earned It; Just Ask for It!

As a government official, I know how important it is to serve all Ohioans—especially during these tough economic times.  Sometimes, helping can be as simple as telling people the easy ways to keep their hard earned money.

That's why I want to tell you about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). It's a federal tax program that allows people earning less than $49,000 to get up to $5,657 more of their hard-earned money back on their tax refund.  About 800,000 Ohio families qualify for the EITC, but roughly twenty percent of these families don’t take advantage of it.  The reason is they don’t know about the tax credit or don’t know how to access it.
