In-state, sibling, rivalries make OSU vs. OU contest a family affair

Ohio Stadium was no paradise for the visiting Ohio University Bobcats in their quest to upset the Ohio State Buckeyes today, but the subtext of the intrastate contest dates to the Garden of Eden.
 
The story of older brother versus younger applied not only to Julian and DeVier Posey, of the Bobcats and Buckeyes, respectively, but also to the schools. The result of the September 18 contest metaphorically matched Cain’s slaying of Abel, but with the younger brother prevailing on the gridiron. The roles were reversed in the Genesis account.

Local students GEAR UP for college during program at East High

The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs hosted a College Fair program at East High School Saturday, September 11, 2010. GEAR UP is a state grant from the U.S. Department of Education., which provides grant funds for educational programs at the state and local partnership levels to encourage young people to raise their academic expectations, stay in school, take challenging courses, and go to college.
More than 20 historically Black colleges and universities will present student workshops on the college admission process and how to succeed in college.

Junior League of Columbus provides backpacks for Capital Kids

Gina Ginn, of the Junior League of Columbus, and Mayor Michael Coleman distributes backpacks to participants of the City of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department’s Capital Kids after school program at the Marion Franklin Community Center, Tuesday, September 7, 2010. A project of the JLC, founded in 1999, Adopt-a-Backpack has donated over 23,000 supply-filled backpacks to elementary age children to provide them with the necessary tools for academic achievement. Each year, the League raises funds to supply about 3,500 children in Central Ohio with backpacks. The Junior League of Columbus has been donating backpacks to the Capital Kids program for nearly ten years.

City’s first African-American Council President ushered out in style

The legacy of former City Council President Jerry Hammond is replete with swagger, style and substance in the political arena, the East Side community and other places he frequented during his 76 years of life.
People who knew him in different phases of his life took the stage of the Southern Theatre Tuesday to talk about the many ways in which Hammond helped the city grow They wove in remembrances of his leadership, loyalty and friendship as well as of his devotion to family and advocacy for the underserved.
The memorial service at the Southern wrapped up the public tribute in honor of the long-time political and community leader who died on Aug. 25.
Mourners also remembered him on Monday at the King Arts Complex, which is known to many as “The House that Jerry Built.”
The city already has a building named in his honor, but friend and mentee Ako Kambon made a plea at the Tuesday service for the Columbus Board of Education to set aside its policy of not naming school buildings after people. He wants the new all-male school named for Hamm
