Mayor Praises Police For Heroic Actions In University
District
Mayor Michael B. Coleman today commended the Columbus Division of Police for
its courageous and successful efforts that prevented the loss of innocent life
in the University District Sunday. A suspected drunken driver opened fire on
Columbus officers on North Fourth Street yesterday afternoon, engaging police
in a firefight lasting more than 30 minutes. Thanks to the heroic response
from police officers, the incident concluded without injuries to any of the
many motorists and bystanders on the scene.
“Yesterday’s incident is a testament to the dangers our police face on a
daily basis and the valor with which they face them,” Mayor Coleman said. “I
commend our officers for their courage and heroism under fire that resulted in
the containment of this extraordinarily dangerous situation and saved dozens
of lives in the process.”
One Division of Police officer was shot in the face and another in the chest.
Mayor Coleman visited both officers at the Ohio State Medical Center yesterday
and found them to be in good spirits. Both were treated and released last
evening.
